Dear Friend,
Earlier this week millions of people became aware of a breaking news story that highlights the unimaginable lengths the Chinese Government can go to undermine our freedom struggle.
According to news reports, an NYPD officer named Baimadajie Angwang has been arrested for spying on local Tibetan communities in New York for the Chinese government. Angwang was not only an NYPD officer of the 111th precinct but also a member of the U.S. Marines Corps and was employed by the U.S. Army Reserve, as a civil affairs specialist out of Fort Dix.

Tibetans have long known the Chinese government is spying on our communities, even in a free country like the United States, and this incident shows the lengths to which Beijing would go to undermine the Free Tibet movement. That a Chinese spy targeting Tibetans could infiltrate the NYPD, and even the U.S. military, should be a wake-up call for all our leaders – at the federal, state, and local level – about the alarming depth and reach of China's espionage operations.
Demonstrating the scope of Angwang's espionage, The New York Times has reported that one of the prime targets was the local Tibetan community and the Community Center in Queens. The center where over 400 Tibetan school students learn our language, history, and culture. Their main goal was to advance China's political agenda and to try to stop the Tibetan community from engaging in political campaigns for Tibet. In response to this news, the Tibetan Community of New York and New Jersey held a press conference for media personnel, click here to view. This information has strongly disturbed the Tibetan Community and raised many concerns but it is also a reminder of the importance of our work and political activism for Tibet. It also highlights Beijing's deep-seated fear of the Tibetan Freedom Movement.
In other breaking news, earlier this week, it was also reported that China has expanded mass labor programs in Tibet, with 500,000 Tibetans forced into labor camps. This horrifying update is exactly why we must be unshakable in our commitment to fight for Tibet and to spread awareness of China's crimes against humanity. Here at Students for a Free Tibet, we ask that our supporters do everything they can to support the Global Day of Action on October 1st. Protests and events are being planned in over 50 cities covering 5 continents by over 120 movement-based organizations and allies. This Global Day of Action will be, by far, one of the largest cross-movement solidarity actions against the Chinese government.
